A Lenten Collect to Hold to God’s Nearness

Father in Heaven, who is beyond us and yet near to us, our hearts are sometimes weak, and we struggle to believe the news that your kingdom has come near. Strengthen us, Lord, that we would be able to cling to you when you seem far away, trusting that even when we do not experience you present, you fill the space around us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ‘Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”‘ – Mark 1:14-15 Where does God seem to be to you right now? Is he right with you? Far away? Filling your heart? Nowhere to be found? How difficult do you find it to trust that God is present, even when you don’t feel him? Can you talk with him, even when he seems distant? What conversation would you have with him now about his closeness or distance?
